Juan Gris

Spain (1887—1927)
After studying engineering in Madrid, Gris took up painting with José Maria Carbonero. In Paris he became friend of Matisse, Léger, Braque and Picasso. From 1912 he started to develop a more personal style, moving from analytical Cubism to Synthetic Cubism. Picasso never appreciated it. He collaborated with Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes sets and costumes.
