Velimir Khlebnikov
Russia (1885—1922)A poet and playwright, Khlebnikov joined the Hylaea group, alongside Vladimir Mayakovsky and David Burliuk. Through his experiments with language and form, he helped shape Russian Futurism. He contributed to the 1912 manifesto A Slap in the Face of Public Taste and wrote numerous poems, including The Grasshopper. In 1914, the collection Izbornik stikhov s poslesloviem rechiaria (Selected Poems with Postscript, 1907–1914), selected and edited by Aleksei Kruchenykh, was published with illustrations by Kazimir Malevich and Pavel Filonov. Khlebnikov experimented with neologisms, symbolism and the visual possibilities of Cyrillic characters. Together with Kruchenykh, he developed zaum, an experimental language that went beyond conventional meaning.
