Juan Gris

Spain (1887—1927)

After studying engineering in Madrid, Gris studied painting with José María Moreno Carbonero. In Paris he became friends with Matisse, Léger, Braque and Picasso. From 1912 he developed a personal style, moving from Analytical Cubism towards Synthetic Cubism from 1913 onwards. He collaborated with Diaghilev on sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes.
