Victor Brauner

Romania (1903—1966)
Brauner studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest but was later expelled due to misbehaviour. He continued to paint experimenting with different styles, especially Expressionism. In 1924 he founded the Dadaist-Constructivist magazine 75HP, where he published his picto-poems. In 1925 he travelled to Paris, where he met influential artists and decided to settle there in 1930. Only after the war he could return to Paris, but falling out with Breton he detached himself from Surrealism and continued to work on more stylised, abstract subjects.
